Each decommissioned traffic sign is documented as an individual artefact before entering the monumental work.
A MATERIAL RECORD.
Before becoming part of a larger composition, each sign is photographed, measured and assigned a unique UPX identification number. Its front, reverse, surface details, place of collection, dimensions, condition and corresponding Urban Pixel chapter are recorded.
Once used to regulate movement, prohibit access or indicate direction, these objects now carry scratches, corrosion, repairs, graffiti and traces of prolonged exposure. The archive preserves this material history before each sign is absorbed into a monumental image.
THE 100.
The 100 is a selection of one hundred decommissioned traffic signs within Urban Pixel’s expanding archive. Individually catalogued, each sign retains its identity and material history while becoming a physical pixel in a larger work. The archive continues to grow as new signs are recovered and new installations take shape.
