A MONUMENTAL ARCHIVE OF DISCARDED URBAN LANGUAGE.
Urban Pixel is an ongoing art project by Scoobafish that transforms retired traffic signs into monumental images across the landscape.
Once used to regulate movement, warn, prohibit and direct, the signs are removed from circulation and reassembled as physical pixels. From the ground, they remain fragmented objects marked by weather, impact and time. Seen from above, they become a single image.
The signs are never painted or cut. Their original colours, shapes, damage and previous lives remain visible. Collection, cataloguing, manual composition and aerial documentation are all integral parts of the work.
Developed in Sardinia and conceived as an evolving series of site-responsive chapters, Urban Pixel explores the tension between human systems, material memory and the natural environment.
THE ARTIST
Scoobafish is the artistic identity of Maurizio Sergiusti, an Italian contemporary artist based in Olbia, Sardinia.
His practice spans sculpture, installation, street art and environmental projects, transforming discarded plastics, decommissioned traffic signs and found objects into works that confront consumption, material memory and humanity’s relationship with the environment.
Urban Pixel extends this research into the landscape by changing the role of the traffic sign: from sculptural material to a unit of the image. Each intervention is developed directly by the artist, from collecting and cataloguing the signs to composition, field installation and aerial documentation.
