THE FIRST SIGNAL.
Concerto 0 is the first realized intervention in the Urban Pixel project: a full-scale prototype created to test how decommissioned traffic signs could behave as physical pixels across the ground.
A total of 127 signs were manually arranged into the form of an apple. Their existing colours, shapes and weathered surfaces produced the image without paint, cutting or digital alteration.
The work established the project’s fundamental method: composition through overlap, tonal variation using existing materials, direct construction on site and aerial observation as the point at which fragmented objects become a single image.
Concerto 0 was not conceived as a preliminary sketch to be hidden, but as the first material proof that the Urban Pixel language could exist at monumental scale.

MATERIAL MEMORY.
Seen from above, the signs merge into a single image. At close range, the image dissolves again into scratches, rust, typography, symbols and fragments of former instructions.
These traces are not imperfections to conceal. They are the material memory of the city and an essential part of the work.
WHEN DAYLIGHT ENDS, THE IMAGE CHANGES.
At night, the same discarded signs reveal a second existence. When struck by a directed beam, their retroreflective surfaces return light with an intensity invisible by day, causing the image to detach from the ground and emerge from darkness.
Urban Pixel is a work with two lives: material, weathered and physical in daylight; luminous, unstable and almost immaterial after dark. Nothing is painted and no illumination is built into the installation. Light activates what was already present.
